A Beautiful Form Watcher

Some toys began as science. The kaleidoscope is one of them.

Around 1816, a Scottish physicist named David Brewster was studying the way light behaves, how it bends, reflects, and polarises. During those experiments he placed mirrors inside a narrow tube and looked through it, and found that the ordinary objects at the far end had been transformed into shifting, symmetrical patterns that no one had arranged and no one could quite predict. He had not set out to make a toy. He had made an instrument for understanding light, and it happened to be beautiful.

He named it from three Greek words, kalos, eidos, and skopeo: beautiful, form, and to see. A watcher of beautiful forms. The patent was granted in July 1817.

The Fastest Theft in Toy History

It went wrong almost immediately. Before any real stock had been made, one of the patented instruments was shown to opticians in London. The design was copied and on sale within weeks, and the patent, as written, could not stop it.

What followed is difficult to overstate. By Brewster's own account, around two hundred thousand kaleidoscopes were sold in London and Paris in three months. Cheap versions of card and mirror plate were sold to passers-by in the street. He spent the following years travelling Britain trying to recover something from an invention that had made other men wealthy, and he never really did. Friends told him that, managed properly, the patent could have been worth a hundred thousand pounds. He had a wife and four children and he felt the loss.

His other complaint is the one that lingers. Of those two hundred thousand instruments, he reckoned perhaps a thousand had been built on sound scientific principles. The rest worked badly, showed the effect poorly, and taught their owners nothing about why it happened. He wrote his 1819 Treatise on the Kaleidoscope partly to set that right, to explain how the thing actually worked and how it ought to be made. Of the millions who had looked through one, he noted, perhaps a hundred understood what they were seeing.

The Same Idea, Two Centuries On

The kaleidoscope you can hold today works on exactly the principle Brewster found. Mirrors set at an angle inside a tube, loose pieces of colour at one end, light at the other, and a pattern that reforms every time you turn it and never repeats. Two hundred years of manufacturing have changed the materials and the making, but not the idea. It could not really be improved, only remade.

The kaleidoscopes we carry from Goki keep the essentials and change very little. Some are card, which is fitting, since card and mirror is exactly what the street versions of 1817 were made from. Another plays music as it turns.

A card kaleidoscope also has one quality the fine brass ones never had. It can be taken apart. A child who wants to know how it works can find out, and discover that the whole effect comes from a few mirrors and a handful of loose colour. Nothing is hidden inside it, which is more than Brewster could say for most of the copies that made his invention famous.

The optics still do the one thing his did. They take a small amount of ordinary colour and, through mirrors and light alone, make something that has never existed before and will never appear in that exact form again.
