A for Axolotl

Most plush animals are archetypes. A dog. A bird. A bear. The shape is generic enough that a child can decide what it is.

Uni-Toys go the other way. Their catalogue runs to more than six hundred animals, and the company describes it, in its own listing, as running from A for axolotl to Z for zebra. In between are a Bernese mountain dog, a border collie, a dachshund, a golden retriever, an Australian shepherd. Not a bird but a wren, an owl, an ostrich.

The effect of that is simple and quite specific. A child who lives with a border collie can be given a border collie. Someone who has just learned what an axolotl is can have the axolotl. The animal is recognisable as the one they already care about, rather than a stand-in for it.

What They Are

Uni-Toys is the plush brand of UNIRING, a family firm founded in 1985 in Hennef, near Bonn. The Uni-Toys name followed in the early 1990s.

They are not a workshop, and they do not claim to be. They design the animals and have them made, and most of the business is supplying other retailers. It is a different kind of company from a family carving figures in a Welsh barn, and worth saying plainly rather than dressing up.

What Is Inside Them

The one thing they have committed to across the whole range, rather than in a token line, is the filling. Every Uni-Toys plush is filled with entirely recycled material. The Eco Line goes further and uses recycled fabric on the outside as well.

The plush itself is largely acrylic, typically around two thirds acrylic to one third polyester, the grade of fibre used for good faux fur, which is what gives the coats their weight and the way they lie. Most pieces wash at thirty degrees.

Manufacturing is in China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, to European toy safety standards.
