Two objects on our shelves were invented in the same year, in the same country, by two men who had both trained for the ministry. Neither of them set out to make a toy.
The One Who Left the Church
David Brewster studied at Edinburgh from the age of twelve, was licensed to preach, and then quietly abandoned the pulpit for optics. He spent his life on the behaviour of light, how it bends, reflects, and polarises.
Around 1816, during those experiments, he arranged mirrors inside a tube and found that ordinary objects at the far end became shifting symmetrical patterns. He named it from the Greek for a watcher of beautiful forms, and patented it the following year. It was an instrument for understanding light. It became one of the most popular toys of the century, mostly in copies he was never paid for.
The One Who Stayed
Robert Stirling took the other path. He was ordained a minister of the Church of Scotland in September 1816 and served parishes in Kilmarnock and then Galston, in Ayrshire, for the rest of his life.
Eight days after his ordination, on 27 September 1816, he filed a patent for an engine.
Ayrshire was coal country. The steam engines pumping water out of those mines ran on high-pressure boilers, and those boilers exploded, regularly, killing the men working near them. It is widely held, though not beyond dispute, that this is what Stirling was working against. His design heated air inside a sealed cylinder instead of boiling water under pressure. The gas never leaves. There is no boiler. It cannot explode.
The clever part was not the safety but the efficiency: a component he called the economiser, now called a regenerator, which catches the heat leaving one cycle and hands it back to the next instead of wasting it. In 1818 one of his engines was pumping water out of an Ayrshire quarry, and it ran for two years.
Two Hundred Years Later
The kaleidoscope never needed improving. It works today exactly as it did in Brewster's tube, and children take the card ones apart to find out why.
The Stirling engine took longer. It was overtaken by steam, then by internal combustion, and spent a century in small applications: ventilators, farm pumps, church organs. It has never entirely gone away, because it will run on any heat source at all, which is a useful property to have in a century worrying about where heat comes from.
The version we carry is made by Exergia, in Freiburg, and brought to toy shops through Kraul. It is built from the tin it arrives in, it takes a couple of hours and about a hundred and fifty parts, and it runs on a tea light. Three or four hours of candle, and it turns.
Two men, one year, one country. One was studying light because light was interesting. The other was trying to stop engines killing miners. Both ended up on a shelf in a toy shop, which is not what either of them had in mind.
