Holztiger is a brand of Gollnest & Kiesel, a family toy company based at Güster in northern Germany. The figures themselves are made in a small town in Romania, by hand, and have been for many years.
The range runs to several hundred pieces: farm and forest animals, dinosaurs, knights and kings, trees and fences and the small scenery a child needs to put a world together. They are made large enough for a toddler to grip and solid enough to be stood on, dropped, and handed down.
Materials and method
The figures are cut from solid maple and beech, hardwoods chosen for density and for how they take an edge. Each one is sawn out, then the edges are rounded and sanded by hand to a satin finish before painting.
The paint is water-based and applied by hand, thin enough that the grain of the wood still shows through the colour. A water-based lacquer seals the piece against saliva and handling. Because every figure is painted individually, small variations between two of the same animal are normal.
