Giengen an der Brenz, Germany
Margarete Steiff was born in Giengen in 1847 and had polio before she was two. It left her legs paralysed and her right arm painful to move, and she used a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She trained as a seamstress, on a… treadle machine adapted so she could work it, the first sewing machine in the town.
